How modified gravity bends gravitational waves in surprising ways

Alice Garoffolo, Gianmassimo Tasinato

May 20, 2026

Modified gravity theories can change how gravitational waves propagate, especially at low frequencies where curvature effects become dominant. The authors show that the standard wave-lensing formula breaks down in these regimes, replaced by a more complex interplay of curvature interactions that can't be seen in geometric optics. This opens a new window to test modified gravity that geometric-optics lensing alone would miss.
