Can ant-inspired algorithms untangle the cosmic web?

Simone Vilardi, Reynier Peletier, Felipe Contreras, Kerstin Bunte

June 4, 2026

Astronomers use an algorithm inspired by ant behavior to find thin structures (filaments, streams, walls) in massive datasets. Dense clumps like clusters overwhelmed the ants with busywork. The researchers added a preprocessing step that identifies and simplifies these hubs, then guided ants through them with a hybrid strategy, improving both speed and accuracy on cosmic web simulations.
