How inflaton-gluon coupling solves the axion dark matter problem

The inflaton—the field driving cosmic inflation—can couple directly to gluons and dynamically shift the QCD confinement scale. Early in inflation, this makes axions heavy enough to eliminate problematic isocurvature perturbations visible in the CMB. Later, as the confinement scale drops and axions become light, de Sitter fluctuations or thermal effects generate dark matter. The mechanism naturally shifts the observable spectral index and remains viable within supersymmetric versions of inflation models.
