Gamma-ray bursts flicker on timescales from seconds to milliseconds, encoding clues about the extreme physics at their core. This work finds the shortest variability in burst lightcurves with measured distances, then connects those rapid flickers to the burst's energy and spectrum—fingerprints of the central engine's behavior.
