Using relativistic physics, researchers studied how vibrations of nuclear matter interact with electron and muon plasma waves deep inside neutron stars. They found that this coupling is strong enough to fundamentally change when nuclear oscillations start and whether they behave like proton or neutron vibrations. The effect matters for understanding neutron star structure and supernova explosions.
