Researchers combined telematics data from millions of vehicles, street imagery, and traffic metrics across Milan to identify where harsh acceleration and braking events occur most. Counterintuitively, wider roads and more open visual space correlate with more intense harsh events, while denser urban frontage correlates with fewer. Cycle lanes without physical barriers showed 19.5% higher harshness than protected paths, suggesting infrastructure design significantly influences driver behavior.
