Do connections or quality determine where research gets published?

Researchers measured idea quality directly from paper text using an AI evaluator, then tracked 6,208 economics papers to see what predicted publication in top journals. Execution quality matters most, idea quality determines intermediate tiers, and connections provide a boost especially at elite journals—but good connections can't make mediocre papers typical acceptances. Publishing rewards both merit and networks in sequence, not one or the other.
