Simulating collisions of boson stars — hypothetical objects made of scalar fields, candidate dark matter components — requires feeding the simulation a physically consistent starting snapshot. The standard shortcut of simply adding two isolated solutions together violates Einstein's constraint equations from the outset. Using a reformulated elliptic solver called XCFC, the team generates genuinely constraint-satisfying initial data for boson star binaries, fixing a systematic error that has quietly plagued merger simulations in this field.
