How matter effects complicate tests of neutrino mixing rules

Physicists want to test whether the neutrino mixing matrix obeys unitarity, a fundamental symmetry that would break if a fourth generation of neutrinos exists. Using energy spectra from long baseline experiments like T2HK and a proposed neutrino factory, they can extract mixing parameters without assuming a specific model—but Earth's matter scrambles the signal. The team shows that CP-conjugate and T-conjugate measurements offer the cleanest unitarity test, potentially revealing physics beyond the standard three-generation picture.
