Do heavy tetraquarks hide in photon collisions at the LHC?

Longjie Chen, Wolfgang Schäfer, Antoni Szczurek

May 21, 2026

When two lead nuclei graze each other at the LHC, the intense electromagnetic fields can produce exotic four-quark particles. This work calculates whether rare tetraquark states decay into photon pairs or J/ψ mesons frequently enough to be observed in these ultraperipheral collisions. They find the J/ψ channel shows clear resonant peaks, but photon pairs are dominated by background processes—contradicting naive expectations from standard hadronic physics analogies.
