Do correlations between particle momentum and collision shape prove collective flow?

When heavy ions collide, particles spray outward with correlations between their average momentum and the elongated shape (elliptic flow) of the blast. Using simulations of fluid dynamics, the team derives exact mathematical relations between these quantities and confirms hydrodynamic models satisfy them precisely. These relations could experimentally verify whether observed correlations arise from genuine collective flow or random chance.
