Does Einstein gravity need supersymmetry to be truly fundamental?

Researchers created a diagrammatic toolkit for constructing Nicolai maps—mathematical reformulations of quantum field theories that eliminate loop integrals—and applied it to four-dimensional supergravity. They discovered that Einstein gravity alone cannot satisfy the consistency conditions needed for such a map; only when paired with its supersymmetric extension (Poincaré supergravity) do the equations work out. This lends concrete support to Nicolai's decades-old intuition that supersymmetry may be fundamental to gravity's structure.
