Can ground-state overlaps measure a quantum system's hidden symmetry?

Ground states of quantum systems contain geometric imprints of their symmetries. By comparing wave functions before and after a spatial conformal deformation, researchers show the overlap encodes the central charge—a number that characterizes the quantum criticality of a system. They tested this on quantum spin chains and edge modes of exotic materials, confirming overlaps reliably reveal this hidden symmetry.
