How do defects in quantum fields bend and twist under pressure?

When a defect breaks symmetry in a quantum field theory, it creates protected operators called displacements and tilts whose strengths characterize the defect itself. Using conformal perturbation theory on O(N) models, the authors traced how these operators transform as defects flow between different quantum states, discovering vortex-like structures when the defect landscape has non-trivial topology.
