Can dissipation explain dark energy's strange phantom crossing?

Prolay Chanda, Subinoy Das, Suratna Das

June 3, 2026

Dark energy appears to have crossed the phantom-divide—a threshold where its pressure drops below a certain limit—according to recent DESI measurements. The authors show that weak energy loss from the quintessence field itself can mimic this transition without invoking pathological phantom dynamics that typically plague such models. The mechanism is minimal and consistent with current observations.
