Which three-body interactions actually matter in coupled oscillators?

Iván Léon, Riccardo Muolo, Yuanzhao Zhang, Maxime Lucas

June 3, 2026

When three or more oscillators interact, different combinations of phase couplings produce wildly different dynamics. The authors derive selection rules based purely on symmetry—the shape of individual oscillators and interaction functions—to predict which couplings actually appear. This gives physicists a shortcut to building accurate models of coupled systems without tedious mathematical reductions.
