What Alzheimer's and Parkinson's brains have in common

Researchers analyzed MRI scans from thousands of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients to find shared brain damage patterns. Both diseases shrink the putamen and accumbens—deep brain structures involved in movement and reward—suggesting a common underlying mechanism. The finding could enable earlier diagnosis and point toward interventions that work against both diseases simultaneously.
