Can ChatGPT fake quantum physics data well enough to fool experts?

S. M. Frolov, O. V. Kravchenko

June 3, 2026

Using only ChatGPT and basic physics equations, the authors generated fake experimental data for some of quantum computing's most celebrated phenomena — including contested Majorana fermion signatures — that looks credibly real. The trick works because the clearest experimental signals reduce to simple math models the AI already knows. The proposed defense: require researchers to publish large raw data archives, since fabricating hundreds of consistent measurement sequences remains impractical for AI.
